How US sales tax works
Most states charge a statewide sales tax, and cities, counties and special districts can add their own local taxes on top — so the combined rate you actually pay depends on the exact location. Five states (Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon, plus Alaska at the state level) have no statewide sales tax at all. The figures here are 2026 averages from the Tax Foundation; always confirm the current rate with your state's Department of Revenue.
